Following the Civil War, the North and the South were in stark contrast to each other. The North, which had always been industrialized surged forward with new inventions that allowed factories to be placed anywhere, and the Transcontinental Railroad completion which made it faster and cheaper to transport products. The South had been utterly devastated by the war. They had never been industrialized, relying on cash crops for their economy. However, plantations which had always moved forward with slaves no longer had access to free labor. The South was still primarily agrarian, but needed some time to become profitable once more.
