The currency was simply the US dollar, whether you were North or South.

It was before the Louisiana Purchase that the South used French francs, and Americans had to change their currency at the border. The 10-franc coin had 'DIX' on one side in big letters, and it was nicknamed the Dixie. Hence, Dixieland.
