The hippies evolved out of the 'beatnik' generation of the 1950's and early 60's. Their theme of opposing 'established' authority and norms shaped the teens of that time into the drop-out, free love, escapist spirit of the hippies of the mid 60's to mid 70's, when it was burned out by the disco fever and heavy drug use.
