The economic reason for the civil war was the taxes on imported and exported goods. The tariffs that the national government put on imported and exported goods affected the Southern economy, but benefited the Northern economy. This helped escalate tensions between the Union and the Southern states.

The southern economy depended on selling cotton overseas, but the North had become very industrialized, and their profits went down when trading with England and other European countries was so easy, so the U.S. put taxes on Importing and Exporting goods to encourage trade between the sections of the country.

Slavery was the obvious social/political reason for the American Civil War. Most people in the North wanted to abolish slavery, while the Southern society and economy held the institution at its center. The debate over whether new states entering the union should be slave or free was a heated one, especially as in the years before the civil war, the number of Senators from slave and free states were equal, and each side wanted to prevent the other from having an advantage.

Slavery is often considered the "cause without which" the Civil War would not have been fought. However the primary issue of the war was "states rights vs. the federal government." The Confederate states felt the federal government was too controlling and that the state should be able to act more independently (like legalizing slavery when the federal government out-lawed it). This is why they declared that they were ceceding from the union. This caused the federal government to reject their claim of independence and supress it with force.

The main causes of the Civil War were, slavery is abolished in California, popular sovereignty is allowed in the Nebraska territory, no slaves can be imported into America, the balance of the North and South is broken, the South is keeping cotton from the North, and when Lincoln is elected president was the final blow and the South secedes from the Union following the North declaring war on the Confederate States of America.

The "direct" cause of the Civil War - the actions which lead to open hostility between the North and the South - was at Fort Sumter, SC. Confederate forces had already seized most federal forts and munitions in the South. Sumter had been surrounded by Confederate troops and was running out of supplies. President Lincoln sent word to the Governor of South Carolina telling of his intentions to resupply the fort. With this action, Lincoln forced the South into assaulting and bombarding a federal fort, starting the Civil War as the aggressors.
