WW1 was a major European war from the very outset. (It was triggered by a Balkan incident, but it wasn't a 'Balkan War'). Already in August 1914 there was fighting for Germany's African colonies. (The participation of the British Dominions gave the war a kind of global dimension - again pretty well from the outset). The entry of the Ottoman Empire into the war somewhat later in 1914 opened up another front in the Middle East; in 1915 Italy entered the war on the side of the Entente - and in 1917 the U.S. declared war on Germany.
