I'm not sure, but the Battle of Ia Drang Valley has got to be right up there near the top. November 1968 450 men were dropped into a small clearing. They were immediately surrounded by 2,000 North Vietanmese soldiers. Three days later and only 2 1/2 miles away a sister battalion was massacred. Read "We Were Soldiers Once...And Young"

The big ones, that caught the attention of Hollywood, the press, TV, etc. were: the TET offensive of 1968 (fought by everybody); Hamburger Hill (fought by the 101st Airborne (Airmobile); The Battle of Dak To (fought by the 173rd Airborne), the Ia Drang (fought by the 1st Cav); and Khe Sanh (fought by the US Marine Corps).

For the USAF: Operation Linebacker II as during this air battle the US Air Force B52 tail gunners shot down NVAF MiG21 interceptors. This is the only time in the B52 bomber's history that B52s shot down enemy aircraft in a war.

It is also histories last time that a tail-gunner on a bomber shot down an attacking interceptor during war time.

For the USMC: The Battle for Hue City in 1968.

For the USA: 101st Abn Div (Ambl)-The Battle of Hamburger Hill in 1969/173rd Abn Brigade-The Battle of Dak To in 1966/67; Operation Lam Son 719 (5th Mechanized Infantry Div.), the US Army's last major offensive of the Vietnam War (1971)

For the USN: Operation Game Warden, with their Swift Boat attacks in rivers of South Vietnam

1. USAF & USN (air units)-Linebacker II, aka the "Christmas Bombings" were the most important and deadliest air battles for the US Air force and US Naval air units. It was also the last time in history that heavy bomber "tail gunners" shot down (in aerial combat) attacking enemy interceptors; B52s downed two NVAF MiG21 in Linebacker II. Linebacker II is also the only time in history that a B52 heavy bomber was shot down in aerial combat (in this case by a NVAF MiG21); although the USAF denies the air kill to the MiG but confirms its loss to a SAM.

2. USA-Ia Drang (1st Air Cav Div); Dak To (173rd Abn Div); Hamburger Hill (101st Abn Div (Ambl).

3. USMC-Battle of Khe Sanh, Battle for Hue (Ancient Imperial City of Hue).

The major air campaigns were Operations Rolling Thunder form '65 thru '68 and Linebackers I and II in 1972. Those were some of the bloodiest air battles of the war.

See the history channel or military channel Dog-Fight series: The Bloodiest Day, that one covers Linebacker II.
