Kalashnikov began design work on the weapon in 1945, and first presented it in 1947. The letters "AK" stand for "Army-Kalashnikov". It has gone through several modifications, and in the case of the Russian Military, one caliber change, since then.

The AK rifle was developed in 1947 and put into service in 1949. The official designation was simply AK with no number.

Work on the AK-47 began in 1945, and it was mass-produced in 1947, hence the name.
