It began with the secession of South Carolina in December of 1860. The fighting didn't start until April 12, 1861, with the bombardment of Fort Sumter. It is this date that is typically referred to as the beginning of the war.

it began in 1861 when some states seceded and formed the confederate states of America, But the first battle was at Sumter's fort, when the confederates states of America refused to surrender. Although the Sumter's fort was completely demolished There were no casualty's. It ended in 1865.
