Guerrilla warfare causes LESS casualties because it is SMALL unit operations. It's also less expensive (cheaper); it can also "border" on "terrorism"...as the targets are often non-combatants (read women and children, churches, schools, and shopping malls). Amongst one of the first "exposures" to the word "terrorist" was when the VC blew up a restaurant in Saigon. Naturally that made the front pages in the US, and the word "terrorist" was used. If the "Rebs" had stuck to guerrilla warfare; and not lost all their men (arms/ammunition) in those conventional battles...YEARS could've been added to the war.
Guerrilla warfare is the unconventional warfare and combat with which a small group of combatants use mobile tactics (ambushes, raids, etc.) to combat a larger and less mobile formal army. The guerrilla army uses ambush (draw enemy forces to terrain unsuited to them) and mobility (advantage and surprise) in attacking vulnerable targets in enemy territory. This term means "little war" in Spanish and was used for the first time in the Madrid Dos de Mayo Uprising. This tactic was widely used against Napoleon's armies in the Peninsular War, used by the Patriot against the British in the American Revolution, and used by the Viet Cong and North Vietnam Army in the Vietnam War.For the source and more detailed information concerning this subject, click on the related links section (Wikipedia) indicated below.
The French lost in the first Indochina war because they underestimated the power of the Viet Minh. They went into it thinking they would crush a small rebellion but they were met with a decently trained military force they they hadn't anticipated. They were also not used to the type of guerrilla warfare that the Viet Minh were using.

Generally a non-uniformed, non-formally trained, mostly non-paid soldier. Although regular Government soldiers, marines, airmen, and sailors CAN be detailed the duties of guerrillas...generally guerrillas are as described in the first sentence. Although, it should be noted, that the VC were one of history's most successful guerrilla fighters.
