In 1917, because Vladimir Lenin was leading the Communist revolution against the Tsar in Russia, and the communist party at this point had no quarrel with the Germans. The country was a still in a mess because of the revolution, so it needed its focus to be on sorting itself out, rather than still fighting. Because of this, The German's could withdraw it's troops and resources from the Eastern front, to boost the forces fighting the British and French troops on the Western front, where America would soon Fight as well. Russia's participation in WW1 is often flossed over by historians in general because they quit the war right in the middle of it (due to their Bolshevik Revolution); afterwards in which faster paced actions buried the Russian's participation into obscurity. Italy experienced the same thing; only a brief mentioning in the history books, because they quit WW2 right in the middle of it, in 1943.
