The development of the gas mask started back in the 1800s. The first patented mask in the United States came from Kentucky. Later another patented mask went into production for World War 1. The story of the mask is on the attached link below.

Gas masks were first used en mass during WW1 (1914-1918). The military requests them, the civilian contractors produce them.
