Alexei MaresyevAlexei Maresyev, a combat pilot who flew without feet became a people's hero in his country. Maresyev's Yak 1 had been damaged in a dogfight and the pilot was forced to crash-land deep in the enemy rear in Kalinin (Tver) Region, Bleeding from several wounds, it took him 18 days of creeping through forests to reach safety He was found by village children and sent by plane to a hospital in Moscow, where his legs were amputated.Although this seemed to mark the end of his flying career, Maresyev refused to give up. He returned to the air force on artificial limbs and learned to fly again. Soon he was in a fighter plane, and subsequently downed seven enemy planes. He died minutes before celebrating his 85th Birthday. Although the Birthday celebration was scheduled two days early before the actual day.
In World War 2, women drew lines on the back of their legs with an eyeliner to simulate the stocking seams. Silk stockings during the Second World War was hard to come by.
There are many candidates in various times & from different countries: I suppose it depends on your view of Heroism. Douglad Bader springs to mind, a man with 2 artificial legs who went on to be a fighter pilot in WW2. Leonidas at the Pass of Thermopolae. Nelson at Trafalgar. John Chard at Rorkes Drift. (3 Brits in the first 4... Guess my nationality !) General MacArthur in the Pacific war in WW2.Alex the Great. Napoleon. Wellington. Audie Murphy. Biggles.....................
The women could not by silk stockings. They would use a pencil to make the line on the back of their legs to make it look like the line from the silk stockings. The painting was done by the lesser moral gals.
