The US supported the South Vietnamese and tried to prevent the spread of communism from North Vietnam. If the military had been allowed to fight the war according to what military strategists knew would work, we would have succeeded. In my opinion, it was a war that was led by our congress...not the military....very frustrating. Perhaps, we should be looking to military strategists today instead of Congress to make the decisions of how to set up and keep peace in the Middle East!

The Soviets supplied the SAMs and radar as well as T54 and PT76 tanks, artillery, MiG17 & MiG21 jets. Although after a while they stopped supplying the MiG17s and only gave North Vietnam MiG21s. Red China picked up the slack from the Russians and continued to supply North Vietnam with their versions of the MiG17s, their J5 series jet. The Chinese Communists were the only nation to supply North Vietnam with the J6 jet (a Chicom version of the Russian MiG19). The North Viet AF only had one regiment of MiG19s during the whole war (they called their air squadrons regiments).
The Red Chinese also supplied their versions of the Soviet PT76/T54 tanks...their Type 63 & Type 59s. All small arms and ammo were combination Soviet/Chicom/Warsaw Pact supplied equipment. The North Viet Navy (which executed the Tonkin Gulf Incident) did so with Soviet/Chicom P4 torpedo boats.
