Robert E. Lee led the south

George B. McClellan, Burnside, Hooker, and George G. Meade all failed when leading the north, so Ulysses S.Grant became the permanent general

During the Civil War, the President of the Confederacy was Jefferson Davis, and Abraham Lincoln was the President of the Union.

Commander-in-Chief of the US Armed forces was President Abraham Lincoln, but the Commanding General of the Army changed during the war.

George McClellan succeeded Winfield Scott late in 1861, but by 1862 was deemed too cautious and was replaced by Henry Halleck. But Halleck's successes were mostly due to his field commanders. One of them, Ulysses S. Grant, was given overall command in 1864, as his armies were finally gaining territory in Virginia. Between Grant and his capable generals Sherman and Sheridan, the Union Army was able to overpower the under-supplied Confederate forces.

It could be General Grant or Abraham Lincolin. Grant was a good General, but Abraham Lincolin selected him and kept the U.S together.
