Germany, without a doubt- millions of German servicemen died in the conflict, with very many more left severely injured, blinded or mentally destroyed. Germany had by far the highest casualty rate of all the nations involved. Following the end of the war, Germany collapsed as a nation- the Government fell, Kaiser Wilhelm II fled to exile in Holland, and there was a nearly a Marxist revolution following popular Socialist uprisings in Berlin and across the country. The German economy was in ruins, with hyperinflation rendering the deutschmark almost worthless. The Treaty of Versailles further undermined Germany's finances by imposing crippling war reparations worth tens of millions of pounds sterling, which would be worth billions by today's values. German heavy industry was reduced to a fraction of what it had once been, to prevent any attempts at future re-armament, and the armed forces were reduced to a small home defence force of only a few thousand troops, with no navy or air force permitted at all. The Allies occupied large parts of the country to enforce these conditions.
