McClellan was excessively cautious and lost many opportunities to capture Richmond.

Who was the commander of the union troops before grant?

George McClellan was the general before Grant. After the battle of Richmond, Lincoln accused him of having the slows due to the fact that he was overly conservative and cautious. He did not pursue the southern retreat after the battle, a move which was considered by many a prolonging of the war. His decisions caused him to loose his position as general to Grant, a drunkard who was willing to take "necessary risks".

Lincoln once accused McClellan of having 'the slows'. What does this mean?

McClellan was super organized. He whipped the confused, disorganized, Army of the Potomac, into a fighting force. Still, he was extremely slow in getting his army moving. When he should have used forced marches, his army moved at a snail's pace. Lincoln wanted McClellan to get a move on.Lincoln was making a cutting remark about McClellan's slow movement to attack the Confederates. Lincoln's phrase was almost like saying McClellan had a disease or something as if it was an excuse. It is almost like saying "He has a cold" or "He has the flu".

What Union general was known as tardy George during the US Civil War?

George McClellan, an indecisive Union commander who Abraham Lincoln dubbed as having a case of "the slows." While President Lincoln was unhappy with McClellan was clear. What dims the harsh term used against McClellan was the fact that on two occasions, President Lincoln first promoted him to General in Chief, then reversed himself, then after relieving him of duty with regards to the Army of the Potomac, Lincoln then reappointed him to lead that army over the objections of his cabinet.

When was Lincoln elected for the second term?

Lincoln's second term election was in 1864; he had been elected in 1860 the first time. He insisted on Constitutional government, and that required elections, even in a civil war. His margin in many states were soldiers furloughed from active army service back home just to vote. The Democrats nominated General George McClellan, who Lincoln had fired after Antietam for "the slows".
