MAJOR GENERAL JOHN SEDGWICK KILLED ON MAY 9 1864 AT THE BEGINNING OF THE BATTLE OF SPOTSYLVANIA COURTHOUSE.

Phillip Kearny was senior to Sedgwick by date of rank as a major general. Also James B. McPherson was a department and army commander at the time of his death, which in essence made him higher ranking than any major general who did not hold such a presidential appointment.

Ulysses S. Grant was the most skilled general. Ulysses S. Grant was the leader of the Union Army. He had all the qualities President Lincoln wanted for the commander of his army. Grant fought very hard and was very stubborn in battles. He did not like to be defeated. Grant was trained at the Military Academy at West Point, New York. During the Mexican-American War he was a second lieutenant in the army. In 1854 he went home to his family. When the Civil War began and the North began losing so many battles, Grant joined the Army for a second time. He was an excellent military leader because of his training and skill. General Robert E. Lee, The leader of the Confederate Army had to surrender to General Grant in 1865. Later General Grant became president of the United States twice. People remember him as a great war hero. They felt he did more as a leader of the army than what he did as president.

Depending on ones view of either the Union or the Confederacy it's going to be either Ulysees S Grant or Robert E Lee.... Or else it's Oliver Cromwell or Prince Rupert of the Rhine.... which particular civil war did you have in mind ? There are many to choose from...

i think general Robert e lee because he was far more strategic than Ulysses s grant because the north could regain their numbers they pretty much didn't care how many men they lost whereas the south could not and lee knew this so he played it defensive throughout most of the war with the exception of Antietam and Gettysburg as you should know he lost both important battles but that doesn't make him a bad general he was still loved by his men

Depends on what rank you are asking for. For the Union, Nelson A. Miles was the last surviving major general (1839 - 1925) and Adelbert Ames was the last living general officer. However, you can count Aaron S. Dagget (1837 - 1938) as the last general of the Civil War as he was a Brigadier General at the time. For the Confederate, Camille Armand Jules Marie (1832 - 1913) was the last surviving major general and Felix H. Robertson (1839 - 1928) was the last general of any of their ranks.

General of the Armies John J Pershing is the highest living officer to serve in that rank. General George Washington was awarded that rank in the 1930's by US Congress, posthumously
