In the year prior to the outbreak of World War II, Germany took over Czechoslovakia in 1938-39 as part of its overall expansionist program and securing of dominance in central Europe. Though small, Czechoslovakia was a threat to German might, especially given its military alliance with France and Great Britain: Germany determined to remove that threat for good.

In the period immediately preceding the outbreak of World War II, Germany wanted to annex Czechoslovakia (and other independent nations on its borders) for primarily two connected reasons. First, it sought to increase its own strength by taking over the industrial and military resources of the Czechs. Second, it sought to remove as a threat, especially in the case of a war against any major European nations, any potential enemies on its flanks. Czechoslovakia was one such potential enemy.
