So many African Americans fought on the union side because the south had slavery, and because some - but very few - slave owners treated there slaves like clay pigeons on a shotgun range. The African Americans wanted to free the slaves and live a better life. But, a lot of African Americans fought on the rebel side as well. So don't believe anyone when they tell you the southerners were vicious bloodthirsty slave owners. Some rebel army's were made of about 70% slaves.

Hope it helps.

Have a good day, by.
