After Edward the confessor died, childless. There needed to be a new King. Edward supposedly told Harold Godwinson, a close official and one of the most powerful men in Britain that it was his on his death bed.

However, William the duke of Normandy beleived that the throne was his because Edward had told him that it was his. And it is speculated that Godwinson even swore an oath to help him take it.

Another, is Harold Hardraada, the king of Norway. Who was the great grandson of a previous king of England who was conquered and died.

William came out on top and became William the King of England in 1066.

There has been much debate over this, but most historians say that William of Normandy accused Harold of lying. He said that, after saving Harold's life, the successor promised the crown to William. It's even in the Bayeux tapestry! But you know what they say; history was written by the winners.
