It was an important battle. At the Second Battle of Ypres, the gas attack was effective, and that's why there are gas bombs today. =)

During WW1 there were 3 main battles fought at Ypres. It was a strategic strong point known as the Yrpes Salient. This means that it stuck out into the German's front line. This was a highly important position to defend for the British/Allied forces and one that the Germans wanted. In the first battle of Ypres, the British captured the town and reoccupied the lost ground. In the 2nd battle from April 22 to May 25, 1915, the Germans made a great attack using gas for the first time in an attempt to retake Ypres. The final battle of Ypres, better known as Passchendale, took place between the 21st of July and the 6th of November, 1917. The 36th Ulstur Division lost many men here and fought with outstanding bravery along with all commonwealth troops. The Meningate stands as a mounument to all the soldiers who died in battle.

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Passchendaele was just near Ypres. And so is Wikipedia :P Also I just spellchecked that whole paragraph above.

Answer:

the first gas attack was used by the Germans,

it was also the worst battle that the Canadians fought, first time a colonial army( the Canadian Expeditionary Force) pushed back a major European continental army, beginning of chemical warfare for both sides and marked a terrible day on all the deaths that occurred, due to chemicals. ------

This depends on which battle of Ypres you are referring to. There were 3, The first (October 19th-November 22nd, 1914) halted the German advance, and led the Allies to hold 3.5 km of the line; it also marked the superiority of defence over offence. The second battle of Ypres (April 22nd-May 25th, 1915) was the first major use of gas (the first was on the eastern front), which caused all to develop a gas mask, and led to the use of gas to never be effective, or a surprise. The third battle of Ypres (commonly known as Passchendaele) (July 31st-November 6th, 1917), was the first successful use of tanks in a combined arms operation.

The second battle of Ypres(Apr.22-May 25,1915) Began when the Germans disrupted a planned Allied offensive. A German poison-gas attack, the first on the western front, demoralized the Allied Troops and created a large gap in their lines, but the Allies retrieved the situation after a bitter struggle. The British lost 50,000 men, the French 10,000 and the Germans about 35,000. This battle began because the Allies thought they could catch the German Army by surprise but as they (German's) were ready it certainly wasn't the case.

There are 3 separate battles of Ypres in WW1. The British called it 'Wipers'. Ypres was a salient, a piece of land sticking out as a bend in the front line. Therefore it was vulnerable to attack from different points around its location and thought strategic in importance to both the Allies & the Germans.
