Even the poor get fed and paid in the army and navy. The poor know this, most of the time. And even though the pay is low, and the food is sometimes bad (or not enough of it); it beats being homeless hands down. During the depression in the US in the 1930's there were lines of men trying to get into the service, but they were full up. For many a poor man, the saying was this about the military, "three hots and a cot!" Meaning, 3 meals a day and a bed to sleep in. When war came we had to pay Uncle Sam back for those meals, bed, and pay. But it was worth it, Uncle Sam treated his men fair and just. During the war sometimes we didn't get fed, nor a bed to sleep in, it was mud and dirty canteen water to drink. But it wasn't Uncle Sam's fault, and we were still getting paid, in most cases tax free and with interest, with the pay building up...since we couldn't spend it in the jungle. When we were wounded Uncle Sam risked expensive helicopters and their crewmen to retrieve us, and flew million dollar jet aircraft to attack the enemy while the evacuation choppers tried to get us out. For some men, the military was their family. Even the poor get fed and paid in the army and navy. The poor know this, most of the time.
