The British & Alied forces returned to UK in June 1940 were obviously saved from the German clutches. More than 300 000 were repatriated. It may well, in part, have been due to the effect of British Armour in the Arras region in the previous days that had an effect on the invincablity of the Panzer attack. The German High Command were, at that time, still unsure of their effect in the ongoing war against the French in particular. That France collapsed so quickly was, at that time, unknown.
British and French forces were cut off by the invading Germans, and would have been destroyed if the Germans hadn't called off the land advance. About 340,000 allied soldiers made a quick escape to Britain.
Later, throughout the rest of the war, the allies basically destroyed the city by bombardment.
The BEF (British Expeditionary Force) invaded France at the start of the war. They where suffering heavy losses, so they decided to retreat back to the UK. This operation became known as the battle of Dunkirk, the British troops where lined up in huge long snakes across the beaches, waiting for the boats to pick them up. Lots of boats arrived. Not all of them Naval or Military vessels alot of them where Pleasure or recrational craft. While waiting for the boats to pick them up, the troops where under constant fire and bombs from luftwaffe fighters and bombers. Luckily, the RAF managed to keep the luftwaffe at bay and the boats managed to get the surviving troops home.
The British Expeditionary Forces were assisting France in defense against the invasion by Germany. The situation became hopeless and the BEF tried to find a way to escape back to England. They withdrew to Dunkirk and asked England to send ships to pull them out. England sent as many military vessels and that was not enough. So civilian fishermen and boaters crossed the Channel to bring them back. General Harold R. L. G. Alexander was sent to Dunkirk to lead the evacuation. Before this, he had effected the pull-out of Burma. He did such a good job of preventing un-necessary losses, that he was knighted and promoted to command all the Allied forces in the Mediterranean.
British forces retreated across the English Channel.
