On May 5 , 1775 , more fighting broke out. Leading a small group of New Englanders known as the Green Mountain Boys , Ethan Allen captured the British Fort Ticonderoga on Lake Champlain. The British were caught by suprise.

Fort Ticonderoga was at the entrance to Canada, contained a larger amount of military supplies. So Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys were a militia from Vermont, along with Colonel Benedict Arnold and they seized both Fort Ticonderoga and Fort Crown Point without a shot being fired. The British, who were not prepared to fight, surrendered quickly.
This battle was used as a morale boost to keep the soldier's spirits up, as this was the first rebel victory. Also the capture of this fort resulted in more weaponry and artillery for the colonists, somewhat shifting the not-quite balance of power in this time period of the Revolution.
The Battles of Saratoga took place in September and October of 1777. There are several reasons why the battles were significant. The American victory over the British was decisive and bolstered the independence movement. With that said, it provided the opportunity for France to enter the war against their longtime rival, the British empire. French support was vital to the American fight for independence.
It helped the Americans recover cannons and gunpowder, which was vital in the other battles to help them win the war.
