In WW1 most of the fighting was in Europe because the war was primarily a confrontation between two blocs of European powers: France, Russia, Britain and a little later, also Italy (and various minor powers) against Germany and Austria-Hungary, soon joined by the Ottoman Empire. Later the US fought alongside the Entente. Many older schoolbooks claim that the war was 'about Imperialism'. In fact, it was first and foremost a European war (with an extension in the Middle East). The Great War began among the major powers in Europe. Some were fighting for more territory and some were fighting to help their allies. All the major countries of Europe were involved, so the land war was fought there. However, the war did extend out to other countries like Turkey and middle east and also to many oceans.
