It was used on the series IIa Land Rovers used as basis for conversion to desert warfare from 1968 onwards. The colour was mixed by hand and thought to be the best for desert camouflage at the time. They were nicknamed "Pink Panthers" or "Pinky" for short. The colour is no longer used.
During WWII and American bomber went missing in the Australian desert. Search planes initially failed to spot the wreckage because its paint had been sand-blasted away, leaving the pink undercoat exposed. this absorbed the desert colours, making it perfectly camouflaged.
