As the war went on, more and more slave refugees came ito the Union lines, and the North had to decide what to do with them. They could not be sent back south to help the enemy. As the war progressed. more and more plantations came into the battle zones, and it became impossible to stop the slaves from fleeing. Slavery was being gradually wrecked by the war itself, almost irrespective of what the Federal government did. Ultimately, slavery was bound to perish if the war continued long enough. So the war included abolition of slavery because the south didn't quit in time to avoid this.

They had made it impossible to create new slave-states. So the South broke away from the Union, to form the Confederacy, taking all the cotton revenues with them.

That is what caused the war.
