The languages were more difficult. Most were verbal rather than written so could vary dramatically between clans of the same tribe, let alone between tribes. The Northern Cheyenne, for instance, could have difficulty understanding the Southern Cheyenne. Sentence structure would have been different. Many native languages contained no pronouns. Native sign language, more universal, would have been used in conjunction with speech to convey their meaning. Primitive? The American Indians were able to convey the meanings of their thoughts regarding anything and everything - the very reason for language.
