On June 16, 1858, when Lincoln was seeking the Republican nomination for US Senator from Illinois, he gave a speech since referred to as the "House Divided" speech. In part, he said
A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe this government cannot endure, permanently, half slave and half free. I do not expect the Union to be dissolved - I do not expect the house to fall - but I do expect it will cease to be divided.
Lincoln's statement alluded to the battle over slavery, which was then legal throughout the South (as far north as Maryland and Delaware).
