The features of Africans and thus African-descendants (black Americans) are varied. At times, it can be difficult to tell since African Americans are typically mixed and the amount of this admixture varies thus resulting in a difference of typical features. A genetics test (done through a blood sample test) is an accurate way of finding out one's ethnicity but they are expensive.
