The first encounter began centuries of abuse, death, disease, and loss of land by the Native Americans. The Europeans saw the Native Americans they encountered as less and killed or tried to enslave whole areas. They practiced environmental terrorism by introducing plants, insects, and animals not native to the land they settled. They took land without regard to the people living on it and considered it "free or open land". When the Jamestown settlers founded Jamestown they settled in an Native American empire called Tsenacomoco within 8,000 miles and 14,000 people. With them came earthworms that would help unleash a convulsive and permanent change to the American landscape. The worm did not exist in the hardwood forests of New England and because of that litter piles up on the forest floor, but when earthworms were introduced they did away with the litter on the floor. This created conditions where water leached away nutrients and the forest became more open and dry. Thus, began the first steps toward the American landscape that is seen today and the demise of the Native American lifestyle.

The Europeans just barged in and started taking land like it was theirs to begin with. The Indians were pissed because they didn't like random people taking what is rightfully theirs. I also say Indians because Native Americans is what we call them, but the fact of the matter is that there was no America at the time and it was called something else so there were no "Americans".
