It was originally a quarry. The spaulding lake area sits atop a portion of the ancient escarpment of bedrock which exist throughout the counties of Erie and niagara. It is very deep. I believe an underwater spring was struck and allowed to fill in. The lakes clarity is due to the bedrock bottom and walls.
