The north and the south both wanted different things. They were both willing to fight to the death to get it though. The south wanted to be able to use slavery for their cotton and/or tobacco and/or indigo (these were really important for them back then) plantations. The north thought that that was wrong. They think that all men (and women) are created equal, colored or not.

∙ 10y agoIt should always be remembered that before the US Civil War, Americans whatever their location in the USA had allot in common as Americans. They for the most part religious people, glad that they had a large degree of liberty, more than in most other nations, and were patriotic.
The US Civil War did not change their basic identities, and until the war, slavery yes was an issue, but not a new one at all.
The best answer to this question is that during the Civil War, slavery existed in the North and in the South. Certainly the number of slaves in the Northern states was small in comparison to the South.
