The Indian Removal Act was signed by Andrew Jackson in 1830. This gave the government the right to remove the Eastern tribes and give them lands in the west "forever." Interestingly, it referred to this forced removal as an exchange. The eastern Indians were promised land in the west without regard to the tribes already in the regions, nor the fact that the lands were far different from what the eastern tribes were used to.

For the various tribes involved, the Trail lasted from 1831 to 1838. The Cherokees were the last tribe moved, after they won the Supreme Court case Cherokee Nation vs. the US. President Andrew Jackson moved them contrary to orders from the court.

As people began to move west they wanted the Native American lands. The Indian Relocation Act of 1830 officially said that the tribes were to be removed. From the very moment of the first colony the European settlers did their best to kill, remove, or displace the Native tribes from their lands.
