The idea that John Bell ran on a strong antislavery platform is rather false. Bell was the third wheel in a tight race between Douglas and Lincoln; where he hoped to cause a deadlock in the electoral vote to send the decision to Congress where he would be a strong choice. Because he was not a strong candidate on the campaign trail and could not draw any support from the South at all.
