The March to the Sea
General Sherman was ordered to take an Army from Tennessee through the heart of the Confederacy and ordered to destroy the ability of the South to continue the war. He took his forces through Atlanta and to most of the major cities of Georgia and South Carolina. His forces did not bring adequate food and basic supplies, so foraging and looting became commonplace. His forces destroyed the major railway center at Atlanta and destroyed most of the manor houses which were owned by slave owners. General Sherman's strategy was one of total war, in which every person or thing which is not for you is considered to be against you, and is then destroyed. The largest Southern Armies were in Virginia fighting Grant's advance, so most of the opposition for Sherman came from local militias and smaller formations of regular Army. Today, Sherman is remembered for unlimited devastation.
In the "first" Battle of Saratoga (September 19, 1777), forces under Colonel Morgan scattered British advance troops in the fields of John Freeman, a Loyalist. This is often referred to as the Battle of Freeman's Farm.

Fredericksburg, Virginia ANSWER. The advance guard of Sherman's Army entered the city of Savannah, but already on Dec. 21, 1864.
When it became clear to Confederate General William J. Hardee that the target of Sherman's armies was Savannah, Georgia and not Macon Georgia, he ordered Confederate cavalry unites to harass the Union's rear and both flanks. Also, he ordered all available militias to march eastward in an attempt to protect Savannah.
By destroying all the farms and railroads in his path, Sherman helped to wreck the Southern economy and starve the Confederate troops in the field. Eventually he liberated the blockade-runners' port of Savannah, which prevented South from improting war supplies. Sherman's strategy shortened the war by months, at almost nil casualties.
The "March To The Sea"
It was not strictly an advance, as it was opposite of Grant's order to pursue the Army of Tennessee into the mountains. Sherman believed his supply-line was too long and vulnerable to support a campaign in difficult mountain country, so he settled on a programme of destruction in the rich Georgia farmland, wrecking railroads, destroying civilian morale, and helping to starve the Confederate armies in the field. This was the March to the Sea, and it shortened the war by months, at almost nil casualties.
One key reason was that General Sherman did not meet any large Southern armies to prevent his advance to Meridian, Mississippi. Additionally, the planned combination of Sherman's army with that of General Smith's was not required in order to reach Meridian. And, Sherman's base of operations in Vicksburg was secure.

It depends on how far in advance you book and when you want to go. Long weekends and special events are the most expensive. Weekdays are cheaper.
This US Civil War battle was part of Union General Sherman's western march attacking Georgia. It was a tough campaign and at Kennesaw Mountain, the Union lost an offensive battle to the South. Confederate General Joseph Johnston repulsed a Sherman advance. Johnston's fortifications were too strong for Sherman's assaults.
