The Hopewells were a Native American culture in Ohio and various parts of North America, originating as early as 100 BC. Although the actual name of the tribe is unknown, they were called â??Hopewellâ?? after Mordecai Hopewell, an Ohio landowner whose property held mounds that were dug up in the early 19th century. Their dwellings were quite sophisticated . They were rectangular, made with posts and thatched roofs. They raised crops, gathered plants, hunted and fished. Their tools included knives and projectiles made with flint and obsidian.
