The main reason for Americans moving west was for the fertile soil to grow crops on. But there were other factors such as the sense of adventure and latter on the discovery of gold. A big push factor was that the economy had just crashed and people had no money so they went west to try and make there fortune.

-The open space provided shelter for outlaws to hide from the law
