Abraham Lincoln was skeptical about organized religion, although he participated in church with his wife. Politically, he adhered to the beliefs of the Founding Fathers, especially with regard to representative democracy.

He believed in being truthful.

Abraham Lincoln and his mother believed that 'what will be--will be' and nothing can change it, not even prayer.

Abraham said that praying to a god was a waste of time. He mocked the idea of Immaculate Conception. Before he got into politics he would tell of the inconstancies in The Bible and how the Bible contradicted itself. When he became a politician he was able to use the Bible stories he read to get his message across to the masses.

Abraham also believed in transmutation of species (Evolution).

Abraham believed in compassion and doing right for one's neighbors and friends. He believed in honesty and had the trust of the people in the community. He believed in education and worked very hard to get one. He was mostly self-taught.

There are other things that Abraham believed in that are not discussed. Those beliefs are contrary to the beliefs of many, then and now. Abraham Lincoln believed in evolution. Evolution was just becoming known. Before Lincoln heard of evolution, Lincoln believed in the transmutation of species.

Also, if people knew of the next belief it would be upsetting to many. There would be denials and excuses to explain his position. Some of the early writers of Lincoln have become unpopular and even hated for telling of this belief that Lincoln had. Ward Lamon and William Herndon are two. Ward Lamon was Lincoln's best friend during the war years and William Herndon was Lincoln's law partner for over half of Lincoln's adult life. If you asked them, they would tell you that Abraham Lincoln did not believe in God. Abraham even mocked the idea of Immaculate Conception. He did not believe that Jesus was the Son of God. On the subject of Catholicism, he told others that the Pope was not God's representative on Earth.

Lincoln was an atheist. He was also a politician that was able to use the Bible to motivate believers into action.

Below is an example of stories that differ.

Christians are fond of this story and tell it as if it were true: As his mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, lay dying, her last words to her nine-year-old son were: "I am going away from you, Abraham, and I shall not return. I know that you will be a good boy and that you will be kind to Sarah and your father. I want you to live as I have taught you, to love your Heavenly Father and keep His commandments."

Many years later this is what Abraham Lincoln told Herndon her last words were, "When I stood by the bed she reached out one hand as if to embrace me, and pointed to my sister Sarah. She said in a whisper. 'Be good to her, Abe!' "

The two stories are very different, it is up to the reader to decide which one is true.

Only a few Confederate leaders were the real traitors to the union.
