A trading post is a place where people trade goods and stuff. In the 15th century trading posts were built by European traders along the coasts of Africa and Asia as a base for trade with the interior. Trading posts or 'Factories' were islands of European law and sovereignty, but European authority seldom extended very far beyond the fortified post.
Canadian-American James J. Hill was the creator of the Great Northern Railroad. He was a man of high public duty that believed that the railroad needed the land to be prosperous to thrive. The Great Northern Railroad didn't receive any land grants such as the other railroads. Hill did well in his construction of the rail.

James Jerome Hill (September 1838 to May 1916) was the chief executive officer of the Great Northern Railway. He became known as "The Empire Builder" due to the size of his railways stretching between the Upper Northwest, Northern Great Plains and Pacific Northwest.
