You are clearly looking for the simplistic answer: tipi, tepee or teepee. None of these is an accurate answer, however.

The Lakota word tipi means "they dwell" and is notthe name of the buffalo-hide lodge used by that portion of the Sioux - it is simply a word incorrectly applied historically by ignorant white people. The Lakotas called their homes by several names:

  • tiikcheya
  • tiphestola
  • wakheya
  • wizi
  • tiowa (a painted tipi)
  • wiowa (a painted tipi)

Among other Plains and marginally Plains tribes, words were used in their own languages to mean the conical "tent":

Blackfoot......................moyis

Arapaho........................niiinón

Sanish (Arikara)............akAhpaátu

Sahaptin (Yakama).......ts'xwilí

Cheyenne.....................xamaa-vee'e ("ordinary dwelling")

Crow.............................ashi

Hidatsa.........................atitsuahe or masiihi or ati

Many Native Americans lived in Wigwams. Some lived in Wickiups. Others lived in Teepees.

Red Indians is the term usually used by the British to distinguish Native Americans from Hindus. Some may find the term offensive.
