You are clearly looking for the simplistic answer: tipi, tepee or teepee. None of these is an accurate answer, however.

The Lakota word tipi means "they dwell" and is notthe name of the buffalo-hide lodge used by that portion of the Sioux - it is simply a word incorrectly applied historically by ignorant white people. The Lakotas called their homes by several names:

  • tiikcheya
  • tiphestola
  • wakheya
  • wizi
  • tiowa (a painted tipi)
  • wiowa (a painted tipi)

Among other Plains and marginally Plains tribes, words were used in their own languages to mean the conical "tent":

Blackfoot......................moyis

Arapaho........................niiinón

Sanish (Arikara)............akAhpaátu

Sahaptin (Yakama).......ts'xwilí

Cheyenne.....................xamaa-vee'e ("ordinary dwelling")

Crow.............................ashi

Hidatsa.........................atitsuahe or masiihi or ati
