As a young man, Lincoln had jobs, which consisted of manual labor. He was a railsplitter, and a Flatboatman.

When he moved to New Salem, Illinois where he held jobs as storekeeper, postmaster, and surveyor.

He then ran and lost, then ran again for state assembly in Illinois, won, and was reelected, several times.

He then began to study law, on his own, and in 1836, at age 25, he obtained a license to practice law in the state of Illinois. In 1837, Lincoln became a Circuit Lawyer, and travelled throughout Illinois, practicing law. In 1844, he formed a Private Law practice with a partner, William Herndon.

In 1847, he was elected to the US House of Representatives, for one single term, and became known for both his opposition to the Mexican War and the institution of slavery. His career as a lawyer flourished and he began to attract cases outside the state.

In 1856, he switched Political parties, and ran for the US Senate as a Republican, against Stephen Douglas; Lincoln lost to Douglas.

In 1860, he was nominated for the US Presidency, won, and sworn in as the 16th president, on March 4, 1861.

Lincoln had several jobs before he became President. He was a postmaster and store clerk and owner. He was also the Captain of Company A in Black hawk war. He actually did not expect to become captain. He was also a lawyer and congressman, and I think he might have been a senator. Don't hold me to that last one.
