- In 1860, he was elected president and then reelected in 1864 (and we all know how well that worked out for him).

In new Salem he was the post master and worked as a shop clerk. He became a very successful lawyer . He served one term in the US Congress. He became nationally known for his debates with Stephen A. Douglas as a part of their campaigns for the US Senate.
