Pawnee villages were made up of many earth lodges.

These consisted of a very large, shallow pit about 2 or 2 1/2 feet deep in the ground with many short, upright posts set around the circumference. In the centre were arranged 8 much larger, taller posts in a circle, their tops joined by horizontal posts. Then more poles were laid to create the roof, radiating from the central smoke hole. The roof poles were then covered in layers of willow saplings, turves and thatch, with a waterproof layer of clay sealing the entire roof and walls. An entry porch was the only way in and always faced east.

The finished effect was like an igloo of clay, but the interior was warm, dry and snug, with room for at least 10 people.

Pawnee earth lodges could be 70 feet or more across and would last for many years, with frequent repairs to the roof.
