Eugene V. Debs was a union organizer, leader of the Pullman Strike, member of the Socialist Party, a politician, and presidential candidate. Debs was a progressive and more of a moralist than an intellectual or traditional politician. He admitted that he had little patience with the various elements of socialism, especially those in Europe, and he was most comfortable in the company of ordinary working people.
