The Duke of York is an hereditary title of the British monarchy, bestowed upon the second son of a reigning King or Queen. There have been 8 Dukes of York since 1385, and 3 more who held the title of Duke of York and Albany.

Fifth Creation, 1644-1685 (became King James II, 1685-1688)

James Stuart was born in 1633, the second son of Charles I and younger brother of Charles II. He succeeded his brother in 1685, but was removed by the Glorious Revolution in 1688 and replaced by William of Orange as William III. He failed in an attempt to recapture the throne and retired to exile in France.

*The American colony at New York was named for him in 1667 after it was seized from the Dutch in 1664, as their colony of New Amsterdam.

Seventh Creation, 1920-1936 (became King George VI, 1936-1952)

The most famous Duke of York in modern times was the HRH the Prince Albert George, second eldest son of then King George V of the United Kingdom. The Prince was born in 1895 and was not expected to become king. However, in 1936, when his brother became Edward VIII on the death of their father, Edward chose to abdicate the throne in order to marry a divorced American commoner, Wallis Simpson. Prince Albert George became King George VI on December 11, 1936. His wife was HRH the duchess of York, who before her marriage was the Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, youngest daughter of the 14th earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne.

The King died on February 6, 1952 and his wife on March 30, 2002 at the age of 102. *As King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, they were the parents of Queen Elizabeth II, and are the grandparents of the present Duke of York, HRH Prince Andrew.
