There were originally 13 colonies. This consisted of Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island. These colonies came to existence when European settlers came from Great Britain in the early 1600s. They quickly grew in population up to the point of the U.S. Revolutionary War in 1776. In the 19th century the country began to explore the western lands based on the belief of Manifest Destiny, the idea of claiming everything from one coast to another. America, or the Union, in the Civil War era of the country's development would have been around the time that about 30 states were claimed and occupied.
