However, Presbyterian sources say that in 1850, after the Lincolns’ son Eddie died, the family was comforted by the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Springfield; Pastor James Smith became a friend and support to Mrs. Lincoln, who did join that church, and at certain times, Mr. Lincoln went with her to services at the First Presbyterian Church.
