The Yaqui tribe is widely disperse. Originally in pre-columbian times, the Yaqui people occupied a vast territory. The presence of Yaqui in the state of Arizona is known as early as 400 AD. Majority of the Yaqui people lived along the fertile banks of the Yaqui River in present day Sonora, Mexico, in 8 sacred villages still occupied to this day: Vicam, Potam, Bacum, Torim, Rahum, Huirivis, Cocoim (Cocorit), Belen (now called Pitahya).

Many Yaqui fled their homeland along the Rio Yaqui in the late 1800's and early 1900's due to an attempt of genocide by the Mexican government. Thousands of Yaqui's died at this genocide attempt. Those who fled settled in California and Arizona never to return back to there beloved Rio Yaqui.

They Yaqui in Arizona revived their culture ceremonies and language. In 1910, president Woodrow Wilson deeded 40 acres of land to a group of Yaquis in Tempe, Arizona located in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Since then this 40 acres of land grew into the town of Guadalupe. Here to this day Yaqui ritual ceremonies are initaited.

Another small camp still present to this day is Old Pascua village in the midst of downtown Tucson, Arizona
