Benedict Arnold was an American Revolutionary War hero when he defeated British General Burgoyne at the Battle of Saratoga. However, recognition paled against expectations and he became disgruntled. As a result, he turned traitor, making a deal to turn over West Point to the British.
Our turning point was the use of the veto by Andrew Jackson. Jackson was the first to veto acts of Congress for the sole reason that he was against them. Before Jackson, presidents only used the veto on acts they believed to be unconstitutional .

Saratoga
After the Battle of Saratoga, in which the Patriots won and beat the British, many countries made official alliances with Britain. Before that battle, European countries were secretly supporting the Thirteen Colonies. After it, enemies of Britain such as France, Spain, and the Netherlands made alliances with the Thirteen Colonies and against the British. The Battle of Saratoga was a battle that was known as 'the turning point of the war', because at this point, after that battle, Britain was fighting a five-theatre war.

The victory at Saratoga 1777 was what the French needed to see before they would be willing to go to war with England. The ramifications of going to war with England were immense! After Saratoga England offered the Continental Congress home rule within the British Empire. Congress refused and took what France offered. France offered national recognition as a sovereign independent nation. Before Saratoga France covertly offered military resources. After Saratoga France actively contributed to the American war effort. Soon Holland and Spain will enter the war against Britain. Britain's military campaign in America will come to be secondary as Britain found itself in a struggle for national survival.
He was an American Revolutionary War Hero and commander at Fort Ticonderoga, the Invasion of Canada and the Battle of Saratoga. It seems that the first answer forgot the whole treason traitor incident. Arnold while a brave and yes possibly overlooked officer he sold-out America by attempting to provide the British with the plans to West Point which if taken by the British would have allowed them to cut-off New England from the rest of the colonies. The invasion of Canada was also a failure of biblical proportions. He did broke, broken, hated, and basically alone. Addition: Little known is the Battle of Valcour Island on Lake Champlain in the Fall of 1776. General Benidict Arnold led a rag-tag flotilla of gun boats to hold the British off and prevent the recapture of Fort Ticonderoga before the winter set in. This prevented the British from penetrating from the north and cutting off the New England Colonies; considered the heart of the rebellion. That combined with victory at Saratoga in 1777, also spearheaded by General Arnold's bravery, ended the British Northern Campaign; saving the Revolution. In WWII, the US had a policy of naming Aircraft Carriers after famous battles: Saratoga, Ticonderoga, Yorktown, Lexington, Bunker Hill..... British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once said something to the effect that the US should have named a carrier "Valcour Island", because that was considered, by the British, a turning point in the war. Of course, due to the stygma of Benidict Arnold's treason, anything solely accociated with him is tarnished in the eyes of most Americans. However Arnolds treason far outweighed the good he had done. If his plan was successful, the British would have taken West Point and New England would have been separated from the other colonies. Arnold's treasonous acts were deeply influenced by his Tory wife. Arnold died a broken and embittered man who was hated by the Americans and not trusted by the British.
There wasn't really an "Informant" since no FBI was involved but there was a traitor among the family. Fredo was this traitor. Micheal found out of this in part 2 and had Fredo killed, but had to wait to their mother was dead before he did so. Later in part 3 Micheal starts to regret doing so.
